Fairoze

Fairoze always shows great enthusiasm.  His opponent appears to be equally eager to join in this contest and displays a strange 'hopping' motion in his attacks.  At one point, as a result, Fairoze just shrugs him off.  Fairoze makes a good attempt at Harai Goshi but the opponent who was already half turned before the throw manages to turn onto his front.  Around the two minute mark Fairoze pulls off a nice Tai Otoshi and scores Wazari.  In the final few seconds for a moment Fairoze looks at risk on the ground but manages to escape winning this contest.

Fairoze
Fairoze v Rhys

Rhys is quite a bit lighter and shorter than Fairoze but demonstrates a better 'centre' to his balance.  Fairoze is as always, enthusiastic and gives his all.  There is a lot of pulling and pushing but not much action with Fairoze putting in most of the work and Rhys primarily defending.  Rhys attempts to attack with Ko Soto Gari but failed to break Fairoze's balance correctly.  At the end Fairoze wins on a decision.

Fairoze
Jonah v Liam

Liam trains with Jonah so they are used to each other.  Early on Jonah attacks with Ko Soto Gari and suddenly changes to O Soto Gari and gains a Yuko.  Liam makes a number of attacks but his forward techniques are doomed as Jonah is so much shorter than he is.  They both show good attacking Judo and in the process stray off this mat onto the next where fortunately there was no contest in progress.  Jonah is clearly running out of steam and is saved by the end of the contest which he wins.

Jonah v Liam
Jonah

Jonah's opponent takes a very 'defensive' posture, bent over and trying hard to keep Jonah at bay.  After a while the referee stops the contest and explains to the opponent that he has to do some work or risk a Shido.  Jonah makes a variety of attacks and eventually scores Wazari with a Morete Seoi Nage.  At this point Jonah appears to be running out energy as he has not been well for the previous few days and the contest is taking its toll on him but he continues to attack until the end wins the contest with his early Wazari.

Jonah
Jonah

The opponent in this contest is much taller than Jonah.  When the entrants for this contest were divided up into pools there were no under 30Kg, seven under 25Kg and five under 35Kg.  Clearly one person had to be moved from the under 25Kg to the under 35Kg and that fell upon Jonah.  So he is competing here with a boy around 10Kg heavier than him and obviously larger.  This however does not seem to faze Jonah much as he attacks aggressively.  Whilst at one point it looks like the opponent had bought Jonah down, in reality Jonah was attacking and fell over which does not score.  At this point the opponent starts to attack more effectively and at one point tries to lug Jonah over his shoulder but fails.  However, he does shortly throw Jonah and score Yuko with which he wins and Jonah has his only loss of this competition.

Jonah
Jonah

In this contest Jonah's opponent puts in very little in the way of attack and spends all his time trying to keep Jonah at arms length.  However, whilst Jonah takes longer than he normally does, he does catch his opponent with a very subtle Ko Soto Gari for Ippon.

Jonah

Laura v Simone

Simone (in white) is outclassed in this contest as she well knows as she trains with Laura every week.  It is therefore from her point of view, a question of how long can she survive.  The answer is that she does quite well as Laura wins many of her contests in just a few seconds.

Simone puts on quite a feisty display in her efforts to manage Laura but in the end, the big Tai Otoshi was inevitable and this one was a hard landing.

Laura v Simone
Liam

Early on Liam throws his opponent with O Soto Gari and scores a Yuko.  Unfortunatly, as the score is annouced he stops his groundwork and as a result loses his advantage.  The referee explains this to him.  The opponent is making a number of poor attacks in the sense that they are not appropriate for him to try against Liam in the way that he is.  Liam then throws the opponent with O Soto Gari and scores Wazari.  About to enter groundwork Liam again stops when he hears the referee announce the hold in on (Osaekmoi) and the referee once again explains to Liam that one only stops when one hears Matte called.  The rest of the contest is not as interesting but Liam deservedly wins courtesy of his two throws.

Liam
Liam

Liam throws his opponent early on in the contest with what would have been a score of Koka if that still existed under the new contest rules.  Liam almost gets a hold on but gives up when he hears the referee announce the score.  The opponent is displaying negative Judo by just holding Liam off and not actually doing much although he does knock Liam down to his bottom on one occasion.  As a consequence, as Liam is doing all of the positive work, he wins this contest by a decision.

Liam
Liam

This contest is noted by his opponent taking an even more extreme defensive posture than the previous contests involving Liam.  The opponent is bent right over so that Liam can not make proper contact with his attempts at turning in.  Around half way through the contest it is clear that both contestants are tiring but Liam does suddenly find a burst of energy as he puts in a frenzied attack which unfortunately does not come to anything.  At the end of the contest there is no score but Liam wins as a result of his positive attacking Judo.

Liam
Molly C

Molly, who is wearing white, is against an opponent who is repeatedly and only trying for O Soto Gari in a way that can never work as her own balance is wrong let alone her opponent.  Molly tries a variety of techniques from O Soto Gari to Ippon Seoi Nage.  At the end of the contest where there has been no scores the referee has to make a decision based upon the work rate and technique of the contestants.  On that basis he awarded the contest to Molly.

Molly
Molly C

Both Molly and her opponent are having a very good go at each other but with little to show for it.  Mostly there is a lot of pulling around and they seem to be having a good time.  Whilst the opponent is doing a lot of pulling around, it is Molly who is the one who is actually trying a few techniques.  When the contest ends the referee makes a decision of 'Hiki Wake' (a draw).  This is incorrect.  In a contest a winner must be found.

Molly
Molly C

Molly attacks with great vigour and does pull her opponent to the ground but it does not make a score.  Molly then throws with O Soto Gari gaining a Yuko.  Molly misses her opportunity to continue in groundwork by stopping when the referee announces the score.  The contestants continue when the opponent attacks with O Soto Gari but Molly counters with her own O Soto Gari gaining another Yuko.  Now on the ground Molly puts her opponent into a hold, Mune Gatami but after a few seconds the opponent traps Molly's foot which breaks the hold.  Molly manages to reapply the hold by removing her foot only to have it trapped again.  As no progress is being made, the referee calls them to standing however the hold did score Yuko as it lasted for 15 seconds.  Shortly after restarting Molly gains another Yuko with O Soto Gari and wins this contest.

Molly
Molly J v Shona

Molly tries to attack with Uchi Mata which doesn't really work but does bring Shona to the floor for which she gains a Wazari.  This seems overly generous but that is the decision.  Shona manages to convert a later attack from Molly so that Shona gains a Yuko, but at the end of the contest, the Wazari has it so well done Molly.

Molly v Shona
Noah

Noah demonstrates good technique when he takes his opponent down with a Tai Otoshi on the 'other' side which scores a Wazari.  He goes straight into groundwork and manages to turn his opponent over onto his back and gets a hold on (Yoko Shio Gatame).  The hold lasts the count and Noah wins this contest.

Noah
Noah

The opponent here is clearly quite strong and is holding Noah at bay but is not making any attacks of his own.  Noah is doing his best but can not pass the stiff arms.  The referee after a while stops the contest and warns both contestants of the need to actually do something.  Upon restarting Noah continues to attack as best he can with the opponent doing nothing but holding him back.  The opponent after a while more or less falls over and Noah tries to continue on the ground but after a short while the referee brings them back to standing.  Once again, there is little from the opponent apart from being overly defensive and Noah does his best which results in a decision in his favour.

Noah
Noah v Jonathon

These two contestants are familiar with each other training every week together.  They both demonstrate good attacks and appropriate defences.  Noah almost throws Jonathon with a Ko Soto Gari but it fails.  Jonathon then takes the dominant grip behind Noah's neck which Noah should try to avoid his opponent taking.  They end up on the ground but Noah is unable to turn Jonathon over and they are bought to standing.  The contest continues in a similar vein and at the end the referee makes his decision for Noah.  It was a tough call.

Noah v Jonathon
Rhys

In a very short contest Rhys demonstrates a good 'centre' for a tall light person and as a result his opponent is finding it very hard to shift him.  Judging his moment, Rhys counters his opponents attack and scores Ippon with a clumsy but adequate Tani Otoshi.

Rhys
Shona v Amber

Neither Shona or Amber seems to be taking this contest seriously.  They seem to be treating it as a Randori session.  Shona is demonstrating a solid centre but Amber has the advantage of height for the techniques that she prefers.  Just short of the minute Amber thrown Shona with Harai Goshi for Ippon.

Shona v Amber
Shona v Ellie

As per the contest above neither of these contestants appear to be trying to hard and are regarding this more as a general Randori session.  They are probably celebrating the end of school term and can not be bothered to put much effort in. Ellie is showing a very fluid movement and is managing herself and Shona very well.  Shona seems to be busy having a conversation at the same time.  Around two thirds through the contest Shona ends up on the floor but it does not seem to have been scored, possibly because Shona was very much on her side to front.  At the end of the contest we see that Shona has won and one must conclude that there was an earlier throw from Shona that scored as otherwise this result would have been improbable.
